When used in moderation, like anything else, lossy compression is a useful tool. I should also point out that photographs suffer much less visible artifacting than these computer generated examples.

There is similar compression at work on compressed video formats - the most evident example is MPEG video. MPEG is an extension of the JPG standard - Motion Picture Expert Group. All the video you see on your computer is compressed. If you look closely at these videos next time you watch them, you'll notice similar artifacts, particularly near the edges of high-contrast zones.

I've long been known as an anti-DVD person - not because I'm sentimentally attached to my laserdisc collection, but because I really really hate compressed video. So sue me. =)
