Sega Aero City Cabinet Pinouts
Predating the Astro City, Sega's Aero City cabinet used different connectors and pinouts compared to the *City cabs that followed. They use TE/AMP's Mate-N-Lok instead of the Universal Power family of connectors.
On all connectors, there is a key that indicates the location of pin #1. For this reason, no attempt has been made below to indicate plug or socket on the images because it doesn't matter. Pin 1 is always pin 1.
Gender, Pins, Tabs & Sockets
⚠️ The Mate-N-Lok series housings can use pin or socket inner connectors, so be sure to check which ones you need if you're ordering parts.
For all of these connectors, the part codes are listed. The pins come in two gauges, typically the large gauge (lower numbers) are used for power, the smaller gauge (higher numbers) are used for everything else. The last number indicates the alloy type, but for our purposes this isn't important. The cheaper parts have been listed here.

Regarding gauge: The specific gauge for the Aero City is not known, but Sega generally uses 18 AWG for ground, 20 AWG for AC power and 22 AWG for everything else. See also Arcade Cabs & Wire Gauges.
The last digit of every housing is the colour. They are:
| Digit | Colour | Digit | Colour |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | Natural | 1 | Brown |
| 2 | Red | 3 | Orange |
| 4 | Yellow | 5 | Green |
| 6 | Blue | 8 | Grey |
| 9 | Black | ||
Also Note: TE/AMP have several series of part numbers for the same housings. For example, the 3-pin housing uses 1-350766 and 1586847 as well as 1-480700. There are some differences in colour codes but the main difference is material specifications, such as ROHS compliance and flammability rating. As long as you get Universal Mate-N-Lok they'll all be compatible.
Control Input
Start Buttons
Like SNK's Candy cabs, Sega used a separate connector for P1 and P2 start.
| Pin | Function |
|---|---|
| 1 | P1 Start |
| 2 | P2 Start |
| 3 | Ground |
Panel Controls
Two 9-pin connectors are used, one for each player control.
| Pin | Function | Pin | Function | Pin | Function |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Right | 2 | Left | 3 | Up |
| 4 | Down | 5 | Button 1 | 6 | Button 2 |
| 7 | Button 3 | 8 | - | 9 | Ground |
Note that Sega doesn't define pin 8, but if you need a fourth button this is probably a good place to put it.
