Sega Naomi Analogue Panels

Sega's Naomi platform had many different control panels, and many of the analogue panels shared a common connector. The panel connector is a 10-pin, but many of the cabs used an 8-pin connector for each player, and so an adaptor is required.

One Side of a Dynamite Baseball Panel

Above: Bottom view of a 2-player Dynamite Baseball panel, player 2 side. The dual-axis analogue stick is on the left, the single axis 'bat' mechanism is on the right.

Digital buttons (Start, B1, B2 etc) are routed as normal through the 12-pin P1 and P2 connectors.

Driving games such as Crazy Taxi use the analogue lines, but not the replaceable panels like the one shown above. The channels used by driving games are on the Sega *City Cabinet Pinouts page.

The terms V-ref and Vcc are used interchangeably in Sega docs, but they refer to the same thing: 5 volts.

Controls Connectors

Closeup of the 4-pin and 3-pin connectors used on this panelThis panel has a 4-pin connector from each two channel analogue joystick, and a 3-pin connector from the single channel bat mechanism. Both the 1P and 2P sides are combined into a single 10-pin connector.

Analogue Joystick Connector

Pin Signal
1 Vcc
2 V Axis (Channel 0)
3 H Axis (Channel 1)
4 Ground

Analogue Bat Connector

2 Bat (Channel 2)
3 Ground

Analogue Panel Connector

This connector is used on the Dynamite Baseball and Zombie Revenge panel, and others.

Generic Pinout

10-pin Sega analogue connector

Pin Function Pin Function
1 P1 Channel 1 6 P2 Channel 2
2 P1 Channel 2 7 P2 Channel 3
3 P1 Channel 3 8 P2 Channel 4
4 Channel 4 9 Vcc
5 P2 Channel 1 10 Ground

Specific Functions

The pinout below is the same for Zombie Revenge and Dynamite Baseball, except the former does not have the bat signal (though a dedicated bat swinging control for a zombie beat-em-up would be fun…)

Pin Function Pin Function
1 P1 V Axis 6 P2 H Axis
2 P1 H Axis 7 P2 Bat*
3 P1 Bat* 8 N/C
4 N/C 9 Vcc
5 P2 V Axis 10 Ground

Monkey Ball

Monkey Ball has the Vcc and Ground lines reversed, so the joystick would appear rotated 180° to other analogue games.

A diagram for a switch to reverse the axes is available here.

Analogue Cabinet Connector

This connector is used in the Naomi Universal Cabinet, and probably the New Net City, and others. There are two of these connectors, one for each player. Four analogue channels are supported. Zombie Revenge uses two, Dynamite Baseball uses the same two, and the third channel for the bat mechanism.

Sega 8-pin Analogue Connector

Pin Function Pin Function
1 V-Ref* 5 Channel 2
2 V-Ref* 6 Channel 3
3 Channel 0 7 Ground
4 Channel 1 8 Ground

Note:

V-ref is positive voltage (Vcc), usually +5V. Together with Ground they set the max and min values the analogue controller can return.

10 to 8 pin adaptor

If you're installing one of these panels in a Naomi cabinet that uses two 8-pin analogue connectors you will need to make an adaptor.

Sega Analogue 8pin 10pin adaptor diagram This diagram shows all four channels routed to their appropriate destinations. Obviously not all four channels are required for all games.

Sega's own documentation showed that Vcc was routed only to P1, and Ground was routed only to P2. There's no real reason to do it this way, except that it makes an equal number of wires to each connector. Only one each Vcc and Ground needs to be connected to the 10-pin connector.

10-pin 8-pin 10-pin 8pin
1 3 6 P2 4
2 4 7 P2 5
3 5 8 P2 6
4 6 9 Vcc
5 P2 3 10 Ground
