SETA Aleck64 Panel

The SETA Aleck64 panel is unique, used only for the Aleck64 system. It has two joystick mechanisms and six buttons per player, plus two start buttons.

Unusually, it supports inputs via the JAMMA connector, as well as the 3-pin controller connectors. These are signal-compatible with the N64 but use a different connector.

Joystick Mechs

The joysticks have a rotating collar that locks the stick in either 3D or digital mode. The sticks use the same optical encoder wheels that the N64 controllers use, as well as a set of four microswitches for digital mode.

Aleck64 Joystick Mechanism

In digital mode these four microswitches are mechanically locked in place where the joystick actuator can reach them. In 3D mode these switches are moved out of reach, and all four are locked in the closed (active) position.

When all four switches are activated at the same time the Aleck64 system knows the stick is in analogue mode.

Connectors

8 Pin Button Connector

The 8-pin connector is a JST PH-series, part number PHR-8.

5 Pin Stick Connector

The joystick connector looks like a normal Seimitsu or Sanwa joystick connector, but it is not the same.

The 5-pin connector is a JST PH-series, part number PHR-5.

Cable End Connector

The cable from the panel plugs into the Aleck64 board using a 3-pin connector that is electrically compatible with the N64 controller. It's obviously a different shape, but the signals are the same, and a simple adaptor can be made.

The 3-pin connector is a JST PH-series, part number PHR-3.

Extra Buttons

The Aleck64 panel does not support all ten of the N64 buttons. Crucially, when running N64 titles via an adaptor1), three buttons are unavailable: C ↑, C ↓ and Z. Since the controller IC is the same as the N64 controllers, and the pinout for these is well known.2)

The extra buttons can be added by connecting to pins 14, 17 and 20. Pin 8 of the PHR-8 connector is GND.
